Young Adult Book List

Young Adult Books to Read 2009- 2012

The Fault in our Stars by Green (Truly one of the best books I have read this year- story about teens in a cancer support group. The dialogue is superb, the storyline original, and the themes of death, leaving your mark with the living, the angst of the survivors- AMAZING!)

Between Shades of Gray by Sepetys (In 1941, 15 year old Lina is deported in the middle of the night by the Soviet secret police to Siberia…she begins a journey of honor and survival.) EXCELLENT!

Delirium by Oliver  ( Imagine a society where you get a shot to prevent falling in love? Love is considered a disease of madness, an infection) Oliver’s other book: Before I Fall is very good too!

Before I fall by Oliver- very much a teen book, but found myself completely absorbed, a teen has a “normal” teen day in high school, dies & repeats the day, until she gets it right?- you tell me….

Divergent by Roth (a dystopian Chicago where teenagers must make a choice at 16 that determines the rest of their life…)

Adoration of Jenna Fox by Pearson ( 17 year old Jenna just woke up from a coma, it has been a year, so she is told…what really happened to Jenna?)

Magnolia League by Crouch ( When her mother suddenly dies she is forced to move from the West Coast to Savannah, Georgia to live with her grandmother & become part of the debutante society)

Crossed by Condie ( 2nd in the series of Matched) The sage continues for Cassia as she pursues the truth on the run)

Puck never planned to ride but she enters the race as the first girl to compete and is unprepared for what happens)

Ashes by Bick  (An electromagnetic pulse flashes across the sky, destroying every electronic device, wiping out every computerized system, and killing billions. Alex hiked into the woods to say good-bye to her dead parents and her personal demons. Now desperate to find out what happened after the pulse crushes her to the ground, Alex meets up with Tom—a young soldier—and Ellie, a girl whose grandfather was killed by the EMP.

Legend by Liu  ( The former west coast now called the Republic is at war with the Colonies, different classes exist and unlikely alliances & romance during these shocking events for survival)

Time Traveling Fashionista by Turetsky ( What if a stunning vintage dress could take you back in time? Louise has always dreamed of beautiful dresses and movie stars. She receives an invitation to a fashion sale and is transformed into time travel adventure. On a ship, a 100 years earlier, with lots of drama and opulence)

Hunger Games by Collins (This story is set in a New America…
This is a gripping story set in a post apocalyptic world where a replacement for the United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to be used as gladiators in a televised fight to the death. Katniss, from what was once Appalachia, offers to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is focused on survival. With her partner Peeta, they demonstrate compassion in an inhumane situation. It is riveting!
The second book from the author who wrote: the Hunger Games –
is called : Catching Fire, still think I like the first in the trilogy better
but Catching Fire is very good!- continues sage of Catniss and Petra & the central government. Mocking Jay  by Collins ( young adult, part of the Hunger Games series, the third in the trilogy. It is about war and the consequences of war and of course Catniss & her battle with the cruel central government)***

Shiver by Stiefvater-( wow! I stumbled on this book
and really could not put it down. It is about a girl named Grace who lives in Minnesota. As a child she is attacked by wolves, & one wolf saves her. Over the years she sees the wolf  near her property and loves him from afar. Turns out he is a werewolf, and turns human during warm weather and back to a wolf when the temperature gets cold. ) She has 2 follow up books- Linger &       Forever

Giant Slayer, by Lawrence set during the polio epidemic- very good, a girl who visits the children who are in iron lungs and tells stories to the hospitalized kids.Beautiful & sad.
